Landing is an active strength task
The legs do not simply catch the body. Muscles at the ankles, knees, hips, and trunk work to slow movement. This eccentric action controls the descent and distributes force across the body.
If the athlete lacks strength or timing, the landing may become stiff, noisy, or unstable. Strength training and landing practice should therefore support each other. One builds the physical resource; the other teaches how to use it.
A stable finish makes movement visible
Early landing drills often ask the athlete to jump and hold the finish. The pause reveals foot placement, balance, trunk position, and whether the athlete can control momentum. Without the pause, the athlete may hide a poor landing by immediately taking several steps.
The goal is not to freeze every sport landing. The hold is a learning tool. Once the athlete demonstrates control, later drills can include rebounds, changes of direction, or transitions into the next action.
Quiet is a cue, not a complete assessment
Asking an athlete to land quietly can encourage greater force absorption and attention. It is simple and often effective. A quiet landing alone does not prove that every joint is positioned perfectly, but it gives the athlete an external target they can understand.
The coach also observes whether the athlete maintains balance, uses an appropriate range, and controls the trunk. Cues should be limited so the athlete can practice rather than perform a checklist in midair.
Distance and direction should progress gradually
Landing from a small vertical jump differs from landing after a long broad jump or lateral bound. Greater distance creates more momentum, and single-leg landings increase the demand on balance and force control.
Progression may move from two legs to one, from vertical to horizontal, or from known direction to a reactive task. Only one variable needs to change at a time. The athlete should continue showing a useful landing strategy as the challenge rises.
Deceleration connects landing to running
Stopping after a sprint is a series of force-absorbing contacts. The athlete lowers the body, adjusts step length, and redirects force. Landing drills teach related skills in a more controlled environment.
The program can progress from a jump-and-stick to a short run and controlled stop, then to a change of direction. This helps the athlete connect strength and landing awareness to a sport-relevant movement.
Good landing practice builds confidence without false promises
No drill can remove all injury risk. Sport includes contact, fatigue, unpredictable positions, and many factors outside training. Landing work is valuable because it develops qualities involved in managing force, not because it creates an invulnerable athlete.
An athlete who knows how to organize a landing may approach jumping with more confidence and control. The coach should progress the task according to age, training history, growth, sport load, and the athlete's response.
Landing skill should progress from predictable to adaptable
A beginning landing task should make the target clear. The athlete may step from a low surface or perform a small jump and hold the landing. The coach observes foot contact, knee and hip contribution, trunk control, sound, and whether the athlete can stabilize without extra hops. These are coaching observations, not a medical injury screen.
Once the athlete can repeat the task, progression can change height, distance, direction, speed, or the number of legs used. Only one variable may need to increase at a time. The athlete can then add a follow-up action such as a short acceleration or change of direction. This teaches that landing is not the end of movement; it is preparation for what happens next.
Fatigue and competition can alter technique, so the program eventually needs realistic speed and attention demands. However, adding reaction before the athlete controls a planned landing can make errors difficult to interpret. A thoughtful progression builds force absorption first, then adds decisions. The result is not a promise of injury prevention, but a more capable athlete with better options for managing common sport forces.
Landing feedback should be clear and limited
Young athletes can become less coordinated when they receive several body-part instructions at once. A target, sound cue, or simple goal such as landing and holding for two seconds often provides better information. The coach can address the most important change, then let the athlete practice. Video may help when it is used briefly and paired with something the athlete can feel. The purpose is to create an adaptable skill, not dependence on constant correction from the sideline.
